Pet Peeves

Ok so since I'm Mrs. Grumpy Pants today, I thought I'd go on a rant about the things that REALLY grind my gears. Well, not so much a rant, as an organized list (hey, I'm still me):

10) - Guns. I just hate them.
9) - Waking up and discovering I've been drunk texting. I've been a culprit on several occasions, and sincerely wish there was a breathalyzer ap on my iPhone to prevent me from continuing to commit drunk texting.
8) - People who ask me the same question multiple times. If your memory sucks that bad, please carry a pen and notepad with you at all times, so you can write down the answer to the question and reference it at a later date.
7) - Cleaning the litter box. It is the chore I hate the most, even more than doing dishes.
6) - Having to get out of bed when I'm still tired. It hurts.
5) - Slush. It's yucky.
4) - Losing hockey to the Americans. *shudder*
3) - People who hang up on me. I spend a good portion of my day on the phone, and it is intolerably rude.
2) - When I ask "do you have any questions?" and the response is "no", followed by a question. It's fine if you have a question, but don't say "no" first!!!!!!!
1) - The Toronto Maple Leafs. No explanation required.

Olympics

So if you didn't get a chance to watch the Olympic opening ceremony in Vancouver last night, you seriously missed out. Here are my 5 favorite moments from last night:

5 - Canada's entrance - the crowd went absolutely wild, and the look on Clara Hughes' (the flag bearer) face was absolutely priceless.

4 - Nikki Yanofski's national anthem - it was a very different rendition of the anthem we all know and love but I just absolutely love this 16 year old Montrealer. Her voice is absolutely incredible. CTV is using her "I Believe" as their theme for the Olympics. See the video here, it's sure to bring a tear to any Canadian's eye.

3 - The whales. If you saw it, you know what I'm talking about. The "ice" floor cracked apart and a pod of orca whales swam across, spouting through their blowholes. Absolutely incredible.

2 - Wayne Gretzky and company lighting the torch. It was a team effort, and the effect that The Great One had as he made his way from BC Place to the outdoor Olympic cauldron in the final portion of the 45,000+ Km torch relay was truly magnificent.

1- Shane Koyczan's "We Are More" slam poetry. It truly defines what it is to be Canadian, and told the world why we love our country so much. Watch it here.

Now that the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics have officially begun, here are the events I'm most looking forward to:

5 - Ladies moguls - Jenn Heil will probably win Canada its first gold medal on home soil. A moment we all have been looking forward to.

4 - Pairs figure skating - Ever since Jamie Sale and David Pelletier in 2002, this has been an event that I look forward to.

3 - Bobsled - I must admit, as a film buff, I was pretty bummed out that Jamaica did not qualify this year. I guess I'll just have to watch "Cool Runnings" to get my fix.

2 - Women's hockey - I love watching these women, they empower me so much. So incredibly talented, and watching women's hockey makes me proud to be female.

1 - Men's hockey - I will never be able to fully explain my love for hockey. It's something that so many Canadians can relate to. We love it because we were born loving it. We were raised loving it. I'm predicting a Russia vs Canada final, and I know where I'll be for that game; with my dad.

Proud to be Canadian. Go team.

Hadleigh!

For my bestest bud's birthday, I promised her a blog. And this blog will be all about her! She is awesome-tastic, and I really hope she has the best birthday ever, because she really, really deserves it. And so, happy 23rd birthday Hadleigh! Oh and ps, don't forget that I have your tequila.

Oscars

So the nominations came out this morning for the 82nd Academy Awards (to be televised on March 7th @ 8 PM). There's a new format of TEN best picture nominations. Personally, I couldn't even name 10 movies I liked this year, let alone 10 Academy Award worthy movies. But, here are the nominations:

Best Picture
Avatar ---------------- Basically "Pocahontas" w/ cool special effects. Not worth all the hype. But this will be the Best Picture Oscar recipient. Sigh.
The Blind Side -------- Heart-warming movie, though kind of lagged at moments. Pure fluff.
District 9 ------------- Seriously? It was good, but it was Blockbuster-esque... Not epic enough.
An Education
The Hurt Locker
Inglourious Basterds --- My choice for best film. Tarantino is a directorial genius
Precious --------------- Honestly, good movie. Worked its way up there. Won't win, though.
A Serious Man
Up -------------------- Very cute movie. Will win in the animated category.
Up in the Air ----------- Fabulous movie. I'm rooting for Anna Kendrick to get the nod.

Best Director
James Cameron, 'Avatar' --------- I have this nagging feeling he will win. Undeservedly.
Kathryn Bigelow, 'The Hurt Locker'
Quentin Tarantino, 'Inglourious Basterds' ------ Definitely one of Tarantino's best. Deserves it.
Lee Daniels, 'Precious'
Jason Reitman, 'Up in the Air' ----- I like his style (see "Juno" if you haven't already)

Best Actor
Jeff Bridges, 'Crazy Heart'
George Clooney, 'Up in the Air' ----- I love this man. But he won't win.
Colin Firth, 'A Single Man' -------- I think Firth might take this category....
Morgan Freeman, 'Invictus' ----- Ever since "Bruce Almighty", he will always be "God" to me.

Best Actress
Sandra Bullock, 'The Blind Side' ----- No. Just, no.
Helen Mirren, 'The Last Station'
Carey Mulligan, 'An Education'
Gabourey Sidibe, 'Precious' ------ They'll pull a Jennifer Hudson again this year & give it to her.
Meryl Streep, 'Julie and Julia' ---- Best actress alive by far, but she has enough. Not her year.

Best Supporting Actor
Matt Damon, 'Invictus'
Woody Harrelson, 'The Messenger'
Christopher Plummer, 'The Last Station'
Stanley Tucci, 'The Lovely Bones' ---- I love his versatility. Wish he'd win, but it's all Waltz's.
Christoph Waltz, 'Inglourious Basterds' ----- I think a clear choice. His performance was brilliant.

Best Supporting Actress
Penelope Cruz, 'Nine' ------ I can't keep up with her rapid Spanish acceptance speeches, and it is on this basis that I don't want her to win.
Vera Farmiga, 'Up in the Air'
Maggie Gyllenhaal, 'Crazy Heart' ------ I'm sorry, but I just can't stand this woman.
Anna Kendrick, 'Up in the Air' --------- Totally rooting for her in this category!!!!
Mo'nique, 'Precious' ---- After her Globes speech, I never want to see or hear from this woman ever again. *barf*
